TH14 Upgrade Guide 2026: What to Upgrade First

TH14 has 360+ days of upgrades available — but you only need a fraction of that. Here's the priority order that gets you through fastest.

Hey Chief,

Town Hall 14 has a lot going on — new pets, new lab options, a real decision point on heroes, and enough building upgrades to keep you busy for the better part of a year if you let it. The good news is you don't need to do everything. You need to do the right things, in the right order.

This guide walks through exactly that: what to prioritize, what to skip, and how to think about heroes, pets, leagues, and resources at this Town Hall.

Should You Rush or Max at TH14?

Before touching a single upgrade, it helps to decide which path you're on.

Maxing means clearing every available upgrade at Town Hall 14 before moving on. Rushing means doing only the upgrades that matter most for offense and progression, then pushing to the next Town Hall sooner.

The case for rushing comes down to opportunity cost. Magic items, ore, and time are worth more at higher Town Halls — using a Book of Building at TH11 saves you less than using that same book several Town Halls later. Staying parked at TH14 longer than necessary just means slower access to better leagues, better loot, and more CWL medals down the line.

That said, this isn't an all-or-nothing choice. You can rush the core building upgrades while still being deliberate about heroes and pets — more on that shortly.

Building Upgrade Priority at TH14

TH14 has roughly 360 days worth of building upgrades available in total if you're aiming to max everything out. Almost nobody needs all of that to function well at this Town Hall.

A focused priority list — covering the upgrades that matter most for offense and overall progress — brings that number down to around 168 days. With five builders running at full efficiency, that's roughly a month. With six, it's even faster.

Priority Building Upgrade Time (Days) Why It Matters
1st Priority Pet House (All Levels) 9.5 Unlocks and upgrades pets, one of the biggest TH14 power boosts
Blacksmith 5 Improves Hero Equipment progression
Laboratory 7 Keeps troop and spell upgrades moving
Clan Castle 7 Extra troop capacity and stronger reinforcements
2nd Priority Hero Hall 6.5 Supports hero progression
Dark Spell Factory 7 Unlocks and upgrades dark spells
Barracks 7.5 Unlocks new troop levels
Dark Barracks 8 Unlocks new dark troop levels
3rd Priority Seeking Air Mine (New) 3 New defensive trap
Air Bomb (New) 3.46 New anti-air defense
Builder Hut Level 2 ×5 10 Adds defensive value and repair ability
4th Priority Eagle Artillery 8 Major defensive upgrade
Scattershot ×2 15 High splash damage defense
Inferno Tower ×3 18 Strong core defense upgrades
5th Priority Town Hall Weapon Upgrade 8 Improves Town Hall defense and Giga Inferno
Upgrade Along the Way X-Bow ×4 20 Important but lower priority than core defenses
Air Defense ×4 20 Helps against air attacks while progressing
Optional Workshop 5.5 Upgrade if you regularly use Siege Machines

A few notes on how to approach this:

  • Magic items: Only use them on upgrades that run 12 days or longer. At TH14, that's typically just the Town Hall and Eagle Artillery (8-day upgrades), which fall short of that threshold — so it's generally better to hold your books for a later Town Hall where the timers are longer.
  • On-the-way-up upgrades: Some buildings (notably Air Defenses and X-Bows) are worth chipping away at manually while your Town Hall is upgrading, rather than tackling them after. Prioritize Air Defenses lightly here — they don't need to be finished before TH15.
  • Maxers: If you're going for 100% completion, the priority list still applies — just treat it as your "do these first" order rather than skipping anything.

Hero Upgrades — Which Path Should You Take?

Heroes are deliberately left out of the building priority list above because they deserve their own decision.

Hero Upgrades: TH14 Upgrade Guide

Maxing heroes at TH14 takes roughly 220 days — more than the entire building priority list combined. That's a long time to sit at one Town Hall, and it delays better loot, better leagues, and more CWL value the whole way through.

Hero Levels to Upgrade Total Upgrade Time (Days)
Barbarian King (BK) 10 55
Archer Queen (AQ) 10 55
Minion Prince (MP) 10 47.5
Grand Warden (GW) 10 47.5
Royal Champion (RC) 5 15
Total 45 Levels 220 Days

There are three common approaches:

  1. Max all heroes. Straightforward, but slow — generally not recommended if speed matters to you.
  2. Skip heroes entirely and lean on Hero Potions during wars, CWL, and league attacks instead. This is the fastest path, though you'll get weaker value out of any Book of Heroes you use later.
  3. Upgrade one hero only — ideally the Royal Champion, since her upgrade times are notably short at this Town Hall. This gets you most of the speed benefit of skipping heroes while still getting solid value from Hero Books.

Options 2 and 3 are the stronger picks if progression speed is the priority. Option 1 is fine if you're not in a rush and want a fully maxed account at every stage.

Pets at TH14 — What's Actually Worth Upgrading?

TH14 unlocks four pets: the L.A.S.S.I, the Electro Owl, the Mighty Yak, and the Unicorn. Not all of them are worth your builder time.

The Unicorn stands out as the clear long-term investment — it takes around 38 days to fully max from the point you unlock it, but it remains useful well beyond this Town Hall. The Electro Owl is a reasonable secondary option if you've run out of Unicorn upgrades to do, though most players won't reach that point before moving on.

Priority Pet Long-Term Value Recommended Levels
1 Unicorn Excellent 10
Situational Electro Owl Decent in specific air strategies Upgrade only if needed
Skip L.A.S.S.I Poor 0
Skip Mighty Yak Low value at higher Town Halls 0

The other two pets aren't worth prioritizing at this stage. Pet upgrades take a long time, so it's worth being selective rather than spreading builder time thin across all four.

Don't worry about finishing the Unicorn completely before hitting TH15 — it carries over fine, and you can pick it back up once you've got more pets unlocked.

Lab Upgrades — What to Research First

The lab has about 161 days worth of upgrades available at TH14 in total. As with buildings, you don't need all of it — just enough to keep one strong army composition consistently usable.

Air-based armies are a popular pick here since they tend to be straightforward to use and stay relevant as you climb Town Halls. Fully upgrading one air-focused composition takes around 35 days — not every spell or troop in an air army chart needs to be maxed, just the ones for the specific army you plan to actually use.

Priority Troop / Spell Common Uses Upgrade Time (Days)
1 Balloon Coco Loons, Dragon Attacks, Hydra 7
2 Dragon Rider Hydra 8
3 Dragon Hydra, Mass Dragons 7
4 Electro Dragon E-Drag Spam 8
5 Clone Spell Clone Bomb Dragons 5

If you'd rather lock in a specific attack approach instead of figuring out troop priority on your own, the best TH14 attack strategies breaks down armies that work well at this Town Hall, which can help narrow down exactly what to research first.

Ranked Leagues at TH14 — Where You Should Be + Free Ranked Bases

Ranked leagues (formerly trophy pushing) are one of the main ways to earn ore, particularly Starry Ore — currently one of the harder resources to stockpile given how often new equipment gets released.

Most TH14 players land somewhere between Valkyrie League and Witch League, with relatively few reaching Golem League. Witch League is a reasonable target — it's achievable without excessive pushing and unlocks a solid loot bonus.

A couple of practical tips:

  • Avoid auto-enrolling into next week's league if your Town Hall finishes upgrading mid-week. Manually enrolling a day later often pushes you into a better league floor.
  • Use the star bonus every time it's available — it's a meaningful ore boost for very little extra effort.
  • Consider a Hero Potion during league attack days to maximize your results, especially if you're running the skip-heroes approach above.

CWL Medals — Which League and How to Spend + New CWL Bases

Most TH14 accounts sit in Gold or Crystal League for Clan War League, with Master League being relatively rare at this Town Hall. Aiming for Gold I or Crystal League is a realistic, achievable target for most players at this stage, and our New CWL Bases make that easy for you.

One tip that consistently helps: 30v30 war lineups tend to make it easier to land in a higher league than 15v15, since clans can field more players without it affecting matchmaking as heavily.

As for spending CWL medals — patience pays off. Holding onto them until a Hammer-related event (rather than spending immediately) generally gets you noticeably better value, since those events make certain upgrades cheaper to skip via medals. You can hold up to 2,500 medals without any penalty, so there's no rush to spend them the moment you get them.

Raid Medals — Best Use at TH14

If you're skipping hero upgrades, Raid Medals should go almost entirely toward Hero Potions — without them, you'll struggle in wars, CWL, and ranked attacks alike.

If you're maxing heroes (or have medals left over after covering potions), ore should be the next priority — specifically in this order: Starry Ore first, then Glowing Ore, then Shiny Ore.

With new equipment releasing regularly, ore tends to be the bigger bottleneck for most players, free-to-play accounts especially.

Gems and Magic Items — What to Prioritize

If you don't have all five builders yet, that's the first thing gems should go toward — full stop.

Once that's covered, here's a sensible order of priority:

  • Meta equipment you're missing — this should be the top priority, especially for free-to-play players trying to stay competitive.
  • The Goblin Builder — a strong value purchase, especially if you can time it around a Hammer or Summer-type event for extra value. If you can't wait, it's still worth it at full price.
  • Builder Potions/Helpers — useful long-term, but the payoff takes a while to materialize, so these come after the two priorities above.

As for purchases in general: in-game offers built around magic items aren't great value at TH14 specifically, since (as covered earlier) most upgrades here don't hit the 12-day threshold where magic items pay off. A Gold Pass-style purchase is still reasonable for the time reductions on building and research costs, but if you can't commit to buying one every single month, it may be worth waiting until a higher Town Hall to make it a regular habit.

Secret Trick to Upgrade Your TH14 Even Faster

Your upgrade speed isn't just about builders and time — it's about loot. And getting more loot depends on your bases.

In ranked mode, bonus loot scales with league. Climb higher and the same effort pays out a lot more, but staying low means you get less bonus loot. In CWL, it's the same story — magic items come from medals, and medals come from winning CWL wars, which means your defense has to pull its weight too.

A weak base quietly costs you loot, medals, and time — the exact thing rushing is supposed to save.

That's where the TH14 Blue Emerald pack comes in:

  • 🛡️ Bases for every format — War, CWL, and Ranked — all in one pack
  • 🔄 Fresh layouts every month, built to handle the current meta
  • 🏆 Designed by top players, not recycled from public YouTube videos
  • 🔒 Limited access — not sitting out there for every opponent to scout
  • 📩 Delivered instantly to your inbox

Better bases. More loot. More medals. A faster TH14 — and every Town Hall after it.

Questions

It depends on your priorities. Rushing means focusing only on upgrades that boost offense and speed, then moving to the next Town Hall sooner. Maxing means completing every available upgrade before progressing. Rushing generally gets you to better leagues, loot, and medals faster, while maxing suits players who aren't in a hurry.

If you're not maxing all heroes, the Royal Champion is the best single hero to prioritize at TH14, since her upgrade times are notably shorter than the Barbarian King or Archer Queen at this stage. Many players skip heroes entirely and use Hero Potions instead to save time.

The Unicorn is the clear priority at TH14, offering strong long-term value despite a roughly 38-day upgrade time. The Electro Owl is a reasonable secondary option, while the L.A.S.S.I and Mighty Yak aren't worth prioritizing at this Town Hall.
