Quick Start — First Moves at TH16

Reaching TH16 feels different.

You're close to the endgame now. Upgrades are longer, mistakes are more expensive, and planning ahead matters a lot more than it did at earlier Town Halls.

Before doing anything else, make sure your important TH15 upgrades are already done. TH16 isn't the place to fix old mistakes.

Once you're in, here's what we'd do:

• Upgrade the Laboratory first.

• Keep one troop research running at all times.

• Start your core offensive buildings.

• Save your Books and Hammers for the upgrades that actually deserve them.

The biggest mistake?

Treating TH16 like every other Town Hall.

It isn't.

This is where magic items, pets, and smart upgrade timing start making a bigger difference than simply grinding more loot.

Why This Upgrade Strategy Works

At lower Town Halls, the goal is simple.

Attack better. Farm more. Upgrade faster.

Town Hall 16 changes that.

Now it's about getting the most value from every builder, every Book, every Hammer, and every day you spend upgrading.

That doesn't mean we suddenly max everything.

Far from it.

We still prioritize offense because stronger attacks mean easier farming, better wars, and faster progression.

The difference is that we're much more selective with where our time goes.

Building Priority — Exact Order

Our first priority is always offense.

The Laboratory, Army Camps and Clan Castle immediately make every attack stronger.

After that, Hero Hall and Blacksmith unlock even more power through heroes and equipment.

Only then do we shift our focus toward defenses.

The Monolith, Spell Towers and Eagle Artillery are the biggest threats attackers face, so those deserve attention before everything else.

Scattershots, Infernos and X-Bows follow next.

The rest of the defenses?

They'll get their turn.

Just not today.

Magic Items — The Golden Rule

Books and Hammers become incredibly valuable at TH16.

Using one on the wrong upgrade feels a bit like using a Rage Spell on a Builder Hut.

Sure... you can do it.

You just probably shouldn't.

📌 Don't guess with Books and Hammers. This table alone can save you weeks of upgrade time.

Our rule is simple.

If an upgrade is less than 12 days, we let builders handle it.

Books and Hammers are much harder to earn than resources, so squeezing maximum value from each one makes a huge difference over time.

That also means we don't rush to spend them just because we have them.

Sometimes the smartest upgrade...

⏩ How a Good Base Speeds Up Your Progress

Most players think faster progress comes from attacking more.

That's only half the story.

Every successful defense keeps your loot safe, protects your trophies, and helps you climb to higher leagues with better ore rewards.

The cycle looks like this:

• Strong base → fewer 3-stars → higher leagues

• Higher leagues → better loot and ores

• Better rewards → faster upgrades

• Faster upgrades → stronger attacks and defenses

Laboratory Priority — Pick One Path

The Laboratory has always been the slowest building in Clash of Clans.

TH16 doesn't change that.

Trying to upgrade everything is one of the easiest ways to slow yourself down.

Instead, pick one army.

Stick with it.

Air players should keep focusing on Dragons and other air troops since they continue getting strong support moving into TH17.

Ground players can absolutely keep using their favorite armies, but it's worth remembering that future troop upgrades favor air attacks more.

That's another reason we recommend choosing one reliable army instead of constantly switching.

Hero Upgrade Plan

One of the biggest questions at TH16 is whether you should still skip hero upgrades.

The answer depends on how many magic items you have.

If you're free-to-play and waiting for Books and Hammers, you'll probably spend a little longer at TH16 anyway. That makes hero upgrades much easier to fit into your schedule.

We recommend keeping one hero upgrading at a time.

That way you still have four heroes available for wars, farming, and events while steadily making progress.

If you're wondering which hero deserves attention first, we'd go with:

• Royal Champion

• Grand Warden

• Archer Queen

• Barbarian King

Keeping one hero down is much easier to manage than losing half your army every attack.

Pet Priority — Upgrade These First

Pets take a long time to upgrade, so choosing the right ones early makes a huge difference later.

📌 Pets take a long time to level up. Upgrading the right ones now saves months later.

The Unicorn is still one of the safest investments because you'll continue using it for a long time.

Phoenix is another easy recommendation. Few pets provide as much value during attacks.

Spirit Fox should be your next priority, especially if your Royal Champion is part of most of your attacks.

The fourth pet really depends on your preferred army. There isn't one perfect answer here, and that's okay.

Army You Should Use

We still believe in keeping things simple.

One strong army that you know inside out will always outperform constantly switching strategies.

For farming, air armies remain one of the easiest and most reliable choices.

For wars, use whatever you've invested your Laboratory into. That's usually far stronger than trying to copy the newest strategy every week.

Defense Upgrade Order

Not every defense deserves the same attention.

The ones that regularly decide attacks should always come first.

High priority:

• Monolith

• Spell Towers

• Eagle Artillery

Medium priority:

• Scattershots

• Infernos

• X-Bows

Lower priority:

• Archer Towers

• Cannons

• Mortars

At TH16, defense isn't just about protecting trophies anymore.

A stronger base keeps more loot, earns more ores through higher leagues, and slows down attackers enough to make those expensive upgrades worthwhile.

Resource & Trophy Strategy

By TH16, farming isn't the hard part.

Keeping your progress is.

Higher leagues don't just give better loot bonuses anymore. They also reward more ores, which become one of your biggest progression bottlenecks.

That means dropping hundreds of trophies because of weak defenses hurts twice.

You lose resources today.

You lose upgrade speed tomorrow.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Most TH16 players don't slow themselves down because they farm too little.

They slow themselves down because they upgrade the wrong things.

When to Move to TH17

Unlike earlier Town Halls, there isn't a huge reason to rush into TH17 the moment your builders are free.

TH16 is one of the few levels where it's perfectly fine to wait for your planned Book and Hammer upgrades before moving on.

We'd consider moving once:

• Your main army is ready.

• Priority buildings are finished.

• Your important pets are progressing well.

• Your planned magic item upgrades are complete or nearly complete.

That's a much smoother transition than simply upgrading your Town Hall the moment you have enough resources.
