Why Hydra Is One of the Strongest TH18 Armies
Hydra is one of those armies that looks simple and spammy from the outside — Dragons, Dragon Riders, push through the middle — but the difference between a two-star and an overkill triple almost always comes down to the opening. Get the Dragon Duke funnel right, control the pathing with Overgrowth, and this army will walk through any Town Hall 18 base consistently.
This guide breaks down exactly how to execute Hydra at TH18, including a situational trick for bases where the standard approach doesn't work cleanly.

The main army is eight Dragons supported by five Dragon Riders, six Rocket Loons to snipe key outside defenses, one Inferno Dragon for funnel shaping, and a few cleanup troops.
For spells: four Totem spells, two Freeze spells, two Revive spells, one Earthquake spell, one Skeleton spell, and one Poison spell — with one Overgrowth spell in the CC.
CC troops: one Super Dragon, one Inferno Dragon, and the Sky Warden.
Heroes: Dragon Duke (Rocket Backpack + Flame Blower), Minion Prince (Dark Orb + Meteor Staff), Grand Warden (Eternal Tome + Healing Tome), Archer Queen (Giant Arrow + Action Figure).
How to Execute Hydra at TH18 — Step by Step
Hydra is the most reliable because it is easy to execute at Town Hall 18. Here's the step-by-step execution:
- Start the Dragon Duke on one corner or side — with Angry Jelly, he targets defenses automatically; once he reaches the key defenses you want to remove, drop the Earthquake spell and immediately pop his ability; the Rocket Backpack and Flame Blower will clear that section fast
- Deploy the Queen on the opposite side and pop her ability to snipe key defenses and build the funnel on that flank — place an Inferno Dragon on another corner to clean up outside buildings and tighten the funnel further
- Once both funnels are set, send in all Dragons through the middle supported by the Grand Warden, Minion Prince, and Sky Warden — use Rocket Loons to snipe key outside defenses and shape the path further
- Cycle Totem spells throughout to keep distracting high-damage defenses — use the Warden ability once the army enters the most dangerous section or the core to protect the push and keep Dragons moving through
- Drop Overgrowth on one side to reduce incoming damage and create a narrower path — this keeps the entire army together instead of spreading around the outside of the base
- Activate the Minion Prince ability on the back end to slow down the Guardian and remaining high-damage defenses — once the Dragon Duke goes down, use a Revive spell to bring him back for back-end cleanup; time the revive so the main army has already reached that area, keeping him protected
Pro Tip: Don't revive the Dragon Duke too early — wait until the main army is close to where he fell. A revived Duke that's isolated takes heavy damage fast and wastes the spell. Revived alongside the main push, he stays healthy and keeps clearing defenses all the way to the end.
Hydra Tips for Tricky Bases
The standard approach works on most bases — but sometimes key defenses are spread far apart, and the Dragon Duke's natural pathing sends him in the wrong direction before you can pop his ability. Here's the fix:
Use Rocket Loons first to shape the Duke's path.

Instead of deploying the Dragon Duke immediately, send a few Rocket Loons to snipe outside defenses on both sides of your intended entry. With those outer buildings gone, the Dragon Duke will walk directly toward the stacked defenses instead of drifting around the perimeter — then drop the Earthquake spell and pop his ability for maximum value right where you need it.
This works especially well on bases where the Town Hall compartment or a high-value defense cluster sits deeper in the base with lighter buildings on the outside pulling the Duke off course.
One more situational tip: if a few troops split off toward the Town Hall during the main push, don't panic. As long as the funnel is solid and the Warden is with the main pack, the army has more than enough power to clean up even when the push splits slightly. Use a Freeze spell on the Town Hall to reduce incoming damage and let the Dragons handle it.
❗ Common Mistakes to Avoid
Popping the Dragon Duke ability too early — if he hasn't reached the stacked defenses yet, the Rocket Backpack damage spreads across low-value targets and the opening phase falls apart. Give him time to get close before triggering.
Wasting the Warden ability too early — using it before the army hits the core means the biggest threats are still ahead with no protection left. Hold it until the army enters the highest-damage section.
Placing Overgrowth too late — by the time Dragons are already spreading around the outside, Overgrowth can't pull them back. Drop it early enough that it redirects the army before pathing locks in.
Reviving the Dragon Duke at the wrong moment — reviving him while he's isolated from the main army means he takes full defensive fire alone and dies fast. Wait until the main push reaches his area.
Letting the funnel drift on one side — if the Queen or Inferno Dragon doesn't clean up their side properly, Dragons will split around the outside rather than pushing through the middle. Take an extra few seconds to confirm both sides of the funnel are clean before sending the main army.

🎁 Best Way to Defend Hydra Attack Strategy at TH18
Here's the thing — Hydra is one of the most widely used armies at TH18 right now.
Which means the attackers hitting your base in Legend League and CWL/War are likely running this exact army against your base too when you're using it against them.
A free base that wasn't designed with Hydra in mind gives attackers a clean funnel, predictable pathing, and an easy triple. Every overkill triple you pull on offense is being handed right back if your defense can't hold up.
Free bases at TH18:
❌ Not built to disrupt Dragon Duke funnels or Hydra pathing
❌ Publicly shared — attackers have already studied the entry angles
❌ No updates when the meta shifts or a new army variation emerges
❌ Thousands of players running the same layout in your league
The TH18 BLUE Base Pack is built to hold up against exactly the kind of armies covered in this guide:
✅ Fresh War, CWL, and ESL bases every month
✅ Designed by top players who track what's being run at the highest level
✅ Limited to a small player base — opponents won't recognise your layout
✅ Delivered straight to your inbox before each season
