Hey Chief,
Clan War League runs once a month. That's 12 shots a year to stack medals and speed up your progression. Most players are burning at least a few of those shots by being in the wrong place — wrong league, wrong war size, no shot at bonuses.
This guide breaks down the three things that actually move the needle on your CWL medal count every single month.
How CWL Medals Actually Work

If you already know the basics, skip ahead. If not — quick primer.
CWL medals are awarded at the end of every Clan War League season based on two things: the league your clan competed in, and whether you earned a bonus. Higher league = more base medals. Bonus = a significant extra payout on top.
That's the whole system. Which means there are really only three levers you can pull to get more medals every month — and we're going to go through all three.
For a full breakdown of how CWL is structured, rounds, stars, and all that — check out the CWL Explained guide.
Factor 1: Play in the Right League for Your TH Level
This is the biggest one and the most overlooked.
A lot of players just stay in whatever league their clan happens to be in. If the clan is in Gold, they war in Gold. Simple enough — except Gold League medals are some of the lowest payouts in the game, and the difference between Gold and Master is massive.
Here's what the average medal payout looks like across leagues for a 15v15 war:
| League | Avg Medals (No Bonus) |
|---|---|
| Bronze I–III | 20–35 |
| Silver I–III | 35–55 |
| Gold I–III | 55–75 |
| Crystal I–III | 75–100 |
| Master I–III | 100–135 |
| Champion I–III | 135–160+ |
The gap between Gold I and Master II alone is around 162 medals per month on average. That's not small — that's the difference between one hammer and two over a few months.

Now, the common pushback here is: "won't I get destroyed in a higher league?" Probably, yeah — especially early on. But here's the thing: your personal performance matters less than you think. CWL results reflect the clan as a whole. As long as you're attacking and contributing, you're earning medals regardless of the outcome. The goal as a developing player is to get the resources you need every month, not to go undefeated.
The move: Find a clan competing in the highest league realistic for your TH level and get in there. A clan carrying a mix of TH levels can often punch into higher leagues than you'd expect.
Factor 2: War Size — Why 30v30 Changes Everything
Most players default to 15v15 without thinking about it. But if you have the option to war in 30v30, it's almost always worth it.
Here's why: 30v30 wars open up more roster spots, which means clans can carry more lower TH players without it tanking the matchmaking. The result is that lower TH players get access to higher leagues than they could in a 15v15.
| TH Level | Best League (15v15) | Best League (30v30) | Medal Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| TH11 | Crystal I | Master III | +30–40 avg |
| TH12 | Master III | Master II | +20–30 avg |
| TH13 | Master II | Master I | +30–36 avg |
| TH14 | Master I | Master I / Champion III | +15–25 avg |
| TH15+ | Champion I–III | Champion I–III | Marginal |
For a TH13 player, moving from a 15v15 at Master II to a 30v30 at Master I is an extra 36 medals per month on average compared to Master II — and 198 more than sitting in Gold I. Those numbers add up fast over a full year.
The move: If your clan runs 30v30, great. If not, it might be worth finding one that does — especially if you're at a TH level where the league jump is significant.
Factor 3: Bonuses — The Multiplier Most Players Ignore
Base medals are consistent. Bonuses are where the real gains are.
Every CWL round, players who are selected to attack and win their attack can earn a bonus. The bonus payout scales with league — the higher you are, the bigger the bonus.
| League | Bonus Medals (Approx.) |
|---|---|
| Gold I | ~45 |
| Crystal I | ~70 |
| Master III | ~95 |
| Master I | ~120 |
| Champion I | ~160+ |
A player in Master I who earns a bonus walks away with roughly 288 more medals per month compared to sitting in Gold I with no bonus. That's two hammers worth of difference — every single month.
You can't guarantee a bonus every round. But you can put yourself in the best position to earn one by:
- Being in the highest league possible (bigger bonus pool)
- Attacking every round you're selected
- Using strong, proven armies that can three-star reliably
That last point matters more than people give it credit for. A three-star attack means a win, which means a bonus shot. If you're not sure which armies are worth using, the best attack strategies for every TH is a good starting point — more stars means more bonuses means more medals.
And on the defensive side, a base that doesn't get easily two-starred keeps your clan in the fight longer. CWL bases for every TH covers that if you need it.
The move: Don't skip attacks. Ever. Even a bad three-star attempt is better than sitting out. And upgrade fast — the sooner you move up TH levels, the sooner you unlock bigger league placement and bigger bonus payouts.
Quick Action Checklist
- Find a clan in the highest league realistic for your TH level
- Push for 30v30 wars if your clan size allows it
- Attack every single round you're selected — no skips
- Use reliable armies that can three-star consistently
- Upgrade fast to unlock better league placements over time
Want a Better Shot at Bonuses Every CWL?
Remember, only when you win, you get the fullest League medals.
Winning attacks start with good armies — but holding stars on defense is what keeps your clan competitive in higher leagues and brings victory. If your base is getting walked through every CWL season, you're giving away stars that cost your clan rounds.
